BODY SYSTEM AND POWERPOINT

Body Systems in PowerPoint

Author(s):

Amy Burkhart

Grade Level:

5th grade

Timeframe:

Unit will last 5 days and 40 minutes each session

Lesson Description or Explanation

The class will be divided into 4 groups. Each group will be given a topic, either digestive system, urinary system, endocrine system, or nervous system. Students will use their basal book along with other outside sources (library books) to gather as much information as they can over the questions, “How does it work?” , “Why does our body need that system?” and “How do we take care of that body system?”. After the students gather their information, they will compile their new knowledge onto a powerpoint to teach the rest of the class about their specific system.

Indiana Curricular Standards

5.2.3 - Identify how peers can influence healthy and unhealthy behaviors.

5.5.3 - Research Application:
Write or deliver a research report that has been developed using a systematic research process (defines the topic, gathers information, determines credibility, reports findings) and that:
• uses information from a variety of sources (books, technology, multimedia) and documents sources (titles and authors).
• demonstrates that information that has been gathered has been summarized.
• organizes information by categorizing and sequencing.

ISTE Standards

1. Creativity and Innovation

Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes

using technology. Students:

a. apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes.

b. create original works as a means of personal or group expression.

c. use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues.

d. identify trends and forecast possibilities.

2. Communication and Collaboration

Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance,

to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. Students:

a. interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments

and media.

b. communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats.

c. develop cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with learners of other cultures.

d. contribute to project teams to produce original works or solve problems.

Assessments

Formative/Summative

Formative: Students will be asked to express their knowledge to the rest of their class about what they have learned about their assigned body system through the PowerPoint. Formative assessment can take place prior to their sharing when they are collaborating, asking questions, and talking to their other peers about what they have learned or prior knowledge they have.

Summative: Student will present a PowerPoint at the end of the unit with all of their findings.

Prior Knowledge

Curricular Knowledge or Skills: Students will need to know basic information about how the body works (Body systems)

Technology Knowledge: Students will need to know the basics of how the computer works and how to navigate their way through Microsoft. Student will also need to know how to type and convey their thoughts and information from paper to the computer.

Technology

Software: Microsoft Office (PowerPoint and Word)

Procedure

Day One: Students will produce a KWL chart about what they know and understand about the body system they have been assigned. Students will also have the chance to draw diagrams or pictures about what they understand about the body system.

Within their group, students will share what they know and what they want to know.

Day Two: Books will be brought into their classroom. They will be able to gather information about their body system. Together, they will compile their information.

Day Three: They will compile their information together. Students will be introduced to PowerPoint and taught the basics of how to produce a power point.

Day Four: Students will finish creating their power point

Day Five: Students will present their power point to the rest of the class, informing the other students about the important parts of the body system they have been assigned to.

Differentiated Instruction

ESL

Students in the school’s ESL program will be able to conduct their own research and powerpoint in a language that they will learn best from.

Challenge/Extend

As a challenge, if the students need more work or extensions, students will draw a diagram or picture over the system they have been assigned.

Special Needs

Lesson plans can be modified to meet the students needs. If students need to work in small groups, they have that option as well as working individually. If a powerpoint is not something that the child is able to produce, they are also able to use Microsoft Word to write an essay on what they have learned.
