Lesson Description or Explanation

In this class a social studies class and Spanish class will come together to do a joint lesson on immigration to the United States. The title of the lesson is “Coming to America.”

Indiana Curricular Standards


Social Studies: USH.8 – Students will examine the political, economic, social, and cultural development of the United States during the period from 1980 to the present.
USH.8.6 – Analyze the impact of globalization on the U.S economic, political, and foreign policy.
Spanish: MH11.5.1 – Investigate and report on objects and concepts from other content areas.
MH11.7.5 – Compare the social patterns of other cultures and learner’s own.
MH11.3.4 – Compose simple cohesive written information using appropriate formats with greater detail and independence.

Formative – Journal entry: Imagine you are a high school student who just came to America from a Spanish-speaking country. Describe the process of immigrating and how it made you feel, in Spanish.

Prior Knowledge

Curricular Knowledge or Skills: 3 years of Spanish, 2 previous week of discussing immigration in social studies class.

Technology Knowledge: prior use of Skype in Spanish classroom

Procedure

2 min – Come in and get settled.
5 min – Warm-up: Generate 3 questions for “expert on immigration” about becoming a citizen.
10 min – Group questions in a concept map on Smartboard.
45 min – Talk with expert on immigration via web-conferencing with webcam using questions from warm-up and Skype.
15 min – Small group discussion with leftover/additional questions/comments.
15 min – Writing prompt: Imagine you are a high school student who just came to America from a Spanish-speaking country. Describe the process of immigrating and how it made you feel, in Spanish.

Differentiated Instruction

ESL
Use of both Spanish and English in classroom.
Presenter will use visual aids in presentation.

Homework Assignment: Further elaboration on writing prompt.
