Lesson Description or Explanation

Students will be researching nutritional information for fast food restaurants. Students will begin to see how many of the things they are eating when they go out to eat are extremely unhealthy. This will allow them to make better decisions about what they choose when they do go out to eat, and may also influence the frequency they visit fast food restaurants. They will do research on the internet and be asked to create a Power Point presentation in small groups.

a. interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media.

Assessments

Formative/Summative

Students will be assessed on their ability to work in groups. I will keep a journal of the difficulties each group has as well as how they go about solving those problems. They will know that it is ok to encounter problems as a group, but they need to find a productive way to go about solving those problems.

Students will also be assessed on their final product. Each group is responsible for putting together a power point presentation representing their findings. Their project will be assessed on completion, organization, and information. This will be done using a rubric I have created.

Students will also have the ability to rate the other members in their group. They will be given a survey for each member of the group. This is where they will have the ability to assess each members participation. If one member of the group feels they did the majority of the work, they will be able to share their feelings.

Prior Knowledge

Curricular Knowledge or Skills: Upon beginning this project, students will be taught the food pyramid. They will understand how many servings from each group are necessary for a healthy diet.

Technology Knowledge: Students already have an understanding of how to research things on the internet. We will have a conversation about sites that are appropriate and sites that are not. They will be reminded that during this project they should only be on approved websites.

Day 2 & 3: Students will load the list they created the day before. They will then go to their restaurant of choice’s website and look at the nutrition information. They will record the nutritional information for their menu choices on their Word document.

Day 4: Students will be placed into groups to combine the information they have found. They will create a Power Point presentation with all of the information they have found.

Day 5 & 6: Students will continue to work on their presentations. After they have included all of their menu choices, students will be asked to go back through the websites and chose a healthier meal from the menu. They will have to justify their choices.

Day 7:Students will share their presentations with the class and their projects will be assessed.
